The Art of Weddings

94 days to mrs.

Last Thursday, I attended the Art of Weddings at the LUXE Autohaus in Portland. I spent the better part of the evening either a) feeling like I was too far along in the planning process to really be there, or b) wishing that an event like this had taken place eight months ago because I could’ve booked 90% of my vendors in one stop. And I went to the event alone, so that was kind of a drag. But there were fun parts too: Tons of vendors who are new on the scene (in business for a year or less), half a dozen independent wedding dress designers, and lots of yummy treats to sample. And not that I’m any kind of Portland aficionado (hope to get there one day), but for whatever reason, I rarely venture into southeast Portland — especially not to go to luxury car showrooms — so it was a little adventure too.

One of the big highlights was the Noah Peterson jazz trio (pictured above). How I didn’t find these guys online when I was looking for a jazz band, I’ll never know. (Maybe they need a little SEO from a trusty web designer…) Peterson Entertainment has a myriad of different jazz ensembles of various sizes and styles.

Missionary Chocolates is amazing. Only in Portland would you find vegan chocolate truffles that taste this good. I tried them all and, seriously, you would never guess you were eating something without any animal products. I couldn’t choose a favorite, although the cinnamon chipotle (second row, far right) is a stand-out for uniqueness. Super spicy and flavorful.

I couldn’t believe that Oh Baby Lingerie was giving out $50 gift certificates, but I’m planning to check them out this weekend to see if I can find a bustier for my wedding dress fitting. I tried to get some photos of their pieces in the fashion show, but I was too far away to get any decent pictures of the runway. Both Oh Baby and Lille Boutique had pieces in the show, and they both used models of varying ages and body types. I give them huge kudos for that.

Swanky Tables had a great candy station set up, complete with vintage favorites like rock candy. They coordinate all kinds of small events — bridal showers, bachelorette parties, wine tastings, etc. — and they also provide standalone elements, like candy stations, for larger events. I think it’s completely brilliant to find a niche market and focus on the details. Annette clearly has a vibrant, fun aesthetic, and I bet she’d be a blast to work with.

I wasn’t just about the food, I promise, but Pure Sweet is definitely going in my mental rolodex. I’m planning to DIY the edible favors for our wedding, but if I run out of time, that is something I’d like to pass off into their very capable hands. I just ate one of their cookies this afternoon and it was pure, rich chocolately goodness.

One of my hands-down favorites of the evening was Duchess Clothier. Their business cards, their collateral, everything is so unbelievably well done. And in the fashion show, they had actual customers modeling their custom suits — these adorable guys in their pinstripe, patterned, and even mustard-yellow velvet suits. Too cute.

Speaking of which, I was really impressed by all the custom wedding attire designers. The fashion show showcased so many dress styles that you’d never see anywhere else. I am constantly inspired by the talent I see in Portland, especially in areas like art, craft and clothing design.

Oh, and did I mention that Duck Pond was there giving away complimentary glasses of wine? And brides got to keep their wine glasses. I highly recommend the next Art of Weddings to any bride-to-be in the Portland metro, or anyone else who wants to check out some of the freshest, most original vendors in the Pacific Northwest.

Thirteen

95 days to mrs.

We’re now less than 100 days from the wedding, and there are only 13 weekends between now and the big day! Thirteen may sound like a lot, but I look at all the things that have to happen between now and then — too long of a list to even begin itemizing here — and all the travel to be done — three wedding dress fittings in the Bay Area, a couple of wedding showers in California, trips to see both our families, a trip to Spokane to visit my matron of honor…

But the worst of the travel is over. We moved Josh up to Portland over New Years, so now we’re less than an hour’s drive apart. Much better than driving 90 minutes to the airport, a two-plus hour flight to Burbank, waiting for baggage claim, and then driving home in LA traffic on the 5. Hooray!

I have some serious catching up to do across the board, but especially on the blog. Stay tuned!

(P.S. Photo credit to Orange Beautiful, designer of my beautiful 2009 calendar. I can’t wait to use the monthly art prints for a scrapbook at the end of the year…)

23 Before 24

140 days to mrs.

I’ve been inspired by many people to make a list of things I hope to accomplish before my next birthday. With a little over a month to get these done, and the holidays between here and there, I’d better get going! I tried not to include too many holiday things (everyone has to Christmas shop) or too many wedding things (there is life after April 18, or so I’m told).

1. Make these cupcakes.

2. Find a fabulous Christmas dress. (I have my eye on this one.)

3. Make a magnet board.

4. Plan a trip to Spokane.

5. Start a 2009 P.S. (Pretty Sweet) journal, to record something good from each and every day.

6. Start writing an honest-to-goodness business plan.

7. Try at least three new dinner recipies and make three batches of cookies, tarts, or other treats (preferably on my road to being a domestic goddess).

8. Read at least one page from a real book every day (i.e. magazines, blogs, and anything on my iPhone screen do not count).

9. Do yoga at least once a week, in addition to my regular training and cardio.

10. Join, and sign up for a class at, the IPRC.

11. Send five cards. (Christmas cards and wedding invitations do not count.)

12. On nights when it isn’t raining, stop to look at the stars.

13. Wireframe the redesign for my website.

14. Purchase one item specifically set aside for my future home with Josh.

15. Do a December Daily, or at least take a photo every day.

16. Simplify something.

17. Make the table runners for the wedding.

18. Apply for three freelance projects that seem out of reach and are more in line with what I want my business to be.

19. Finish my never-ending personal design/writing project, Listen Closely.

20. Relax.

21. Test drive a Tiguan. Just for fun.

22. Make a new year’s resolution.

23. Take a floral decor, cooking, or dance class.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

177 days to mrs.

Just a quick post to wish my mom a happy birthday. My mom is amazing — she’s brilliant and crafty and godly and generous and fun and just wonderful all-around. And she reads my blog, so she gets serious brownie points there. I am so unbelievably fortunate to have a mom who is also my best friend. I love you, mom!

Centerpiece to Wishing Well

180 days to mrs.

I’ve been collecting vintage glass containers for several months now. I have close to 50 of them now, wrapped in packing paper and stored in a giant Rubbermaid bin in the basement. (I bought said bin thinking that everything wedding-related could fit in there until I was ready for it in April. But we’re six months out and the bin is nearly full. Hmmm. Planning a wedding while living in 636 square feet = bad news.)

I want to give some of them away after the wedding, but there are several (or, like, 20) that I can’t bear to part with. They deserve to have a good life after the reception. My mom sent me a magazine clipping of an eclectic collection of vases lining a windowsill, filled with various flowers, and I think that would be lovely. But maybe I should pick one big one to follow Brooke’s lead

I found this awhile ago through Tara, and I think it’s such a fantastic idea. Maybe have one jar for memories that make me smile and another jar for fun ideas — things Josh and I can do together, places we want to go, people we want to see. They could be big things (vacationing in Italy), small things (dinner and dancing), or anything in between. We’ve really learned how to make the most of our time together these last three years — even when “making the most of it” means spending a whole day at home, talking and laughing and cuddling and watching movies. I never want us to forget how to cherish every day.

6 Months to Go

182 days to mrs.

I’ve been a little out of my blogging rhythm the last couple of weeks, but there’s good stuff on the way! The save-the-dates are in the mail, so I can get back to neglected things and get on to new projects. Table runners, here I come…

Today is exactly six months from the big day. It sounds like quite awhile — some people plan their entire wedding in less, I know (and I am in awe of those people, btw) — but it feels so close. I’m just so relieved to have all my vendors lined up, deposits paid, and lists in order. Despite some minor hiccups (the eight potential florists come to mind), everything has been pretty darn smooth so far. I feel so blessed.
